NIOS conducts two types of exams to accommodate the needs and schedules of its students. They are
  • Public Exams
  • On Demand Exams
The On-Demand Examination system offered by NIOS is a flexible examination scheme designed to allow students to take exams at their convenience. This innovative approach aims to accommodate the diverse schedules and learning paces of students enrolled in NIOS's Secondary and Senior Secondary programs, as well as vocational education courses. This system enables students to schedule exams for specific subjects whenever they feel prepared, without having to wait for the fixed examination cycles typically held twice a year. This system is particularly beneficial for students who may need to retake exams or wish to improve their scores in certain subjects.

Who is it for?

  • Learners Seeking Flexibility: Students who require a more adaptable examination schedule due to personal, professional, or other educational commitments.
  • Students Looking to Improve Grades: Individuals who wish to improve their performance in specific subjects by reattempting exams.
  • Fast Track Learners: Students who have completed their coursework ahead of the traditional academic calendar and wish to take their exams immediately rather than waiting for the scheduled examination periods.
  • Vocational Learners: Participants in vocational education programs who prefer to align their examination schedules with the completion of their practical training or projects.

How Does it Work?

  1. Registration Students interested in taking an ODE must register through the NIOS online portal. During registration, they select the subjects for which they wish to appear in the exams and choose a preferred date from the available slots. The availability of exam dates depends on the exam center's schedule and capacity.
  1. Preparation After registration, students continue their preparation for the exams. Since the ODE system is designed to accommodate the individual preparation pace of each student, they can choose an exam date when they feel fully prepared.
  1. Examination On the chosen date, students appear for their exam at the designated NIOS center. The examination environment and procedures mirror those of the regular NIOS exams, maintaining the same standards of assessment.
  1. Assessment and Results Exams are evaluated following NIOS's standard evaluation criteria. The results are usually declared within a short period after the exam(during the last week of every month for the exams conducted the previous month), allowing students to quickly know their performance.
  1. Retakes and Improvement One of the significant advantages of the ODE system is the flexibility it offers in retaking exams or attempting to improve. Students can re-register for an ODE in any subject to improve their scores, adhering to NIOS's guidelines on exam retakes.
  1. Certification Upon successful completion and passing of the exams, students are awarded certificates for the respective levels through regional centers, which are recognized for further education and employment, similar to the regular NIOS certification.
