The Open Basic Education (OBE) program was initiated in June 1994, to provide upper primary education for children above 14 years of age, later the program was extended to cover children between the 6 to 14 years age group through three levels of flexibility.

Levels of the OBE Programme

  • Level A - Equivalent to Class 3
  • Level B - Equivalent to Class 5
  • Level C - Equivalent to Class 8

Eligibility

  • Age Group: From 6 to 14 years (Children Category), Above 14 years of age (Adult Category)
  • Children with special needs (CWSN)

How does it Work?

  1. Registration and Enrollment Individuals wishing to join the OBE program can register either online through the NIOS website or offline by visiting a nearby NIOS center. The registration process involves providing personal details, previous educational records if any, and selecting the desired level of study.
  1. Curriculum and Course Material Each level has a specific curriculum designed to meet the educational needs of that stage. NIOS provides self-instructional material in various subjects, including language, mathematics, science, social studies, and life skills. These materials are crafted to be learner-friendly and accessible.
  1. Learning Methodology The OBE program adopts a flexible learning approach, allowing learners to study at their own pace and convenience. Education is delivered through a combination of printed self-learning materials, audio-visual aids, and digital resources. NIOS also organizes Personal Contact Programs (PCPs) where learners can interact with educators for doubt clearance and additional guidance.
  1. Assessment and Certification Learners undergo continuous and periodic assessments to gauge their progress. These assessments include both written exams and practical assignments. Upon completing a level, learners receive a certificate from NIOS, signifying their achievement and enabling them to proceed to the next educational level or explore other opportunities.
